Illustrator-Duo Dinoso draws pirates

Animatic + Interview

Ahoy, ye landlubbers! Let´s leave the classic ad setting of the happy family in their living room and move out to the sea, in search of fat booty (no pun intended). We find ourselves in an immersive child´s fantasy, supported by a cinematic music score, where a pirate ship is in hot pursuit of a sailing frigate.

Finally it is revealed what the raid was all about: the popular kinder Schokolade by Ferrero.

The amused mother makes a call to order and assures her little country rats, that everyone will get their fair share of the booty.

More than one grown up viewer might find him/herself reminded of a blissful childhood, which fits the product claim of kinder Schokolade: The chocolate of your childhood.

Instructed by our client M&C Saatchi Berlin the artist duo Dinoso illustrated the pre production animatic for the TVC . Not only were we happy to co-work with the Dinoso boys once again, we´re also really glad that a pirate themed film tested well in market research.
Why? Because everything is better with pirates, of course!

The TVC is on air since the beginning of the year.

Newsflash: Dinoso joins the ranks of the Funky Crew

We´re happy to announce, that, as of now, Funky Frame Films will be officially representing Axel and Dino, the two distinguished  gentlemen behind the artist´s pseudonym Dinoso. In the future our clients can book them via our very own IBS (Illustrator Booking System).

On this occasion Axel, German speaking member of the dynamic duoanswered a few questions about their career in the ad business (translated from German).

FFF (Rainer): So how did you come to draw? Did you start out early as kids?

Axel: For sure! Drawing is our life.

FFF (Rainer): Were there role models, for example from the comic book/graphic novel scene?

Axel: Yes, I started with classic franco-belgium comic books by Maurice de Bevere (Lucky Luke) and Albert Alessandro Uderzo (Asterix), and grew up with the works of Michael Netzer (birth name: Michael Nasser, Marvel und DC).

You could say that Dino, on the other hand, has more eastern roots, like Totoro by Hayao Miyazaki (Studio Gibli) and the works of Ryoichi Ikegami. Simon Bisley (Lobo), too.

FFF (Rainer): How did you meet each other?

Axel: We met 1996 , studying architecture in Oxford.

I was a qualified draftsman and Dino was art-director at Ogilvy Hong Kong.

FFF (Rainer): Oxford, Ogilvy Hong Kong - far out! (thinks about Team OxO, but keeps it for himself)

And what tipped the scale towards working as a team?

Axel: After the first projects we did together it became clear pretty soon that we complement each other really well.

FFF (Rainer): And how did you get to drawing storyboards and animatics? Did you approach agencies proactively or was it more of a coincidence?

Axel: After studying we wanted to become self-employed, start our own comic book series („Danger Granny“😉).

But how it is, you´ve got to live of something, right? While we were doing various side jobs an acquaintant asked: „You can draw? What do you charge per hour? Do you have time tomorrow?"

And it went on like that...;)

FFF (Rainer): Hihi, the comic book thing reminds me of my beginnings. The title of my series: "Babylonia Blues":)

But back to you: did you work with marker pens back then oder was it directly digital?

Axel: Naw, of course we started out with markers and airbrush! Those were the times when you had to bribe couriers with coffee, so that your illustrations could dry a bit more before they went to Hamburg, Berlin etc..

FFF (Rainer): Attention: it gets political - how do you assess the ad industry´s development?

Axel: Generally you could get the impression, that digitalization would win more time for the creative process , the elaboration of ideas. But our business is still characterized by the relation of quality / time and I guess that won´t change.

FFF (Rainer): Are you alluding to our clients that more frequently expect you to deliver better and better quality in a shorter time span...

Axel: That´s what I´m talking about...

FFF (Rainer): Yes, that happens more often. On the other hand, we experience agencies and clients being caught up many weeks in one correctional loop after the other on a single animatic - which is also rather unfortunate for everyone involved.

Axel: True. How do you manage that?

FFF (Rainer): As a representative of illustrators I can only counteract by conveying precisely what client and artist can expect as contracting parties, and how an ideal project time table should look like.

Axel: I´m eager to find out how you roll - we´re very much looking forward to our collaboration!

FFF (Rainer): Dito.

To stay in a pirate allegory: the HMS Dinoso and the MS Funky  will be joining forces to raid the open seas.

As they say in Piratic: ARRRRRRRRR!
